My name is Lina Kitasumi. On this website, I will be sharing with you the various assignments that were done during my semester in ENG 3UI at Jacob Hespeler Secondary School. I am an aspiring social worker with an interest in formal writing.
In this online portfolio, I will be sharing various assignments done in class and things that caught my eye throughout the course. In the university level grade 11 curriculum, there was a heavy focus on human rights. Some of the major topics studied with an emphasis of human rights were:
Macbeth by William Shakespeare
Indian Horse by Richard Wagamese
The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins
Course Reflection and Self Reflection
I found the grade 11 English curriculum at Jacob Hespeler Secondary School to be the most interesting of the last three years because the topics discussed were current issues that are crucial to know and understand. Learning about the history of indigenous individuals was very eyeopening and made me view cultural genocide and discrimination from a different perspective. Being in a technology based English class, I found the work done and the use of media is more relevant and useful as it is the way of our future- everything is online. With a majority of the work being done online, I found due dates were not strongly reinforced and lead to many late assignments. Although due dates are not necessary to be met anymore as it doesn't affect your mark and it should be my responsibility at this point in my education, I found it stressful and work easily piled up when I didn't meet due dates. I loved the indigenous studies and human rights focus in the curriculum as I thought knowing and studying Canada's not so glorious past that Canadian history tries to sweep under the carpet, is crucial to the rising generation to become strong, empowering, and kind leaders and citizens. I would have loved to go even more in depth of Canadian history's darker times, even going broader than just native cultures, to look into the violations of Japanese and Chinese individuals, the Jewish religion, and other discrimination that Canada expressed.
As I prepare to become a grade 12 student, and taking English at the university level; I plan to learn from some of my poor work habits in grade 11. I understand that the people you sit near in class, definitely impact your work habits. I plan to sit with people who have the same dedication as me to get high grades, work hard, and use their time in class efficiently. Also, procrastination was a big factor to my struggle in English this year, for grade 12, I plan to work on anything I'm given in advance by doing assignments in small increments rather than all together the few nights before it's due.
